Navratri Golu Dolls themes, step-by-step display ideas, and doll placement guidelines

Navratri is one of India's most cherished festivals, celebrating the divine feminine energy in the forms of Goddess Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. In South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, Navratri is beautifully celebrated through the tradition of Golu (Kolu or Bombe Habba)—an artistic and spiritual display of dolls arranged on stepped platforms.

More than a decorative display, Golu is a celebration of faith, knowledge, creativity, family traditions, and community bonding passed down through generations.

Unlike other festivals, which are one or two days festivals, this Navratri is grandly celebrated 9 days and its is loved by all generations in the family.  It unites the entire family right from kids to grandmas everyone will actively involve in setting up thematic Golu display.  At least a month before the planning will be discussed and executed by all family members as a team.

This most expected Navratri Golu 2026 falls from 11th Oct 2026 to 19th Oct 2026.

The Significance of Golu

The word "Golu" means a display of figurines arranged on odd-numbered steps, traditionally 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11.   The steps symbolize the spiritual journey of life—from simple living beings to the realization of the Divine.

At the topmost step, the divine occupies the highest place, followed by saints, great personalities, humans, animals, and finally nature, illustrating the harmony of creation.

A traditional Golu display generally follows this order:

  • Top Step: Kalasam (sacred pot), Goddess Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and other deities.
  • Second Step: Lord Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, Murugan, Rama, Krishna, Hanuman, and other divine forms.
  • Third Step: Saints, Alwars, Nayanmars, Acharyas, Gurus, and spiritual leaders.
  • Fourth Step: Royal court scenes, weddings, temple festivals, musicians, and cultural traditions.
  • Lower Steps: Village life, markets, farmers, craftsmen, schools, parks, animals, birds, and miniature landscapes depicting everyday life.
