Ganpati Decoration Ideas for Home: Create a Beautiful Ganpati Setup for Ganesh Chaturthi 2026

Ganpati Bappa Morya! 🙏

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most joyful festivals celebrated across India. It is a time when homes come alive with devotion, beautiful decorations, family gatherings, pooja and festive celebrations.

In 2026, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on 14 September, Monday,  making it the perfect time to start planning your Ganpati setup at home.

Whether you prefer a simple traditional pooja corner or an elaborate festive display, a thoughtfully planned Ganpati mandap can transform your home into a beautiful space for prayer and celebration.

Ganpati Pooja Sthapana: Basic Preparation & Procedure

1) Clean the puja room thoroughly and sprinkle holy water (Ganga jal) to purify the space.
Draw a clean rangoli near the altar. Place a wooden stool or platform (chowki) and spread a fresh red or yellow cloth over it. Make a small mound of raw rice on the platform and place a betel nut marked with turmeric and kumkum on it.

The mandap is the centre piece of your Ganpati decoration. For homes where space and storage are important, a foldable pooja mandap can be a practical choice. It can be assembled for the festival and conveniently stored afterwards.

2) For Kalash Sthapan Fill a copper, brass, or silver kalash with clean water, a coin, and a pinch of turmeric. Place five mango or betel leaves around the mouth of the kalash.
Place a whole coconut (with its husk facing up) on top of the leaves. Set the kalash on the right or north-east side of the Pooja Mandapam/Area.

3) Ganpati Pooja Sthapana Muhurth Timings : (Puja timings and auspicious muhurat may vary by location. Please consult your local Panchang or priest for the exact timings applicable to your city)

Chaturthi Tithi: Begins at 7:06 AM on September 14 and ends at 7:44 AM on September 15, 2026  (for Location : Bangalore, India)

Visarjan Schedule : 1.5 Days: September 15, 2026  5 Days: September 18, 2026  & 10 Days (Anant Chaturdashi): September 25

4) Ganpati idol Placing & Invocation Basic Procedures : Position the eco-friendly Ganesha idol  and gowri idol facing east or north on the prepared platform. Light a ghee lamp (diya) and incense sticks (agarbatti). Hold clean water and rice in your right hand to take a formal vow (Sankalpa) for your family's well-being. Chant the invocation mantras (Pranapratishtha) to welcome the divine presence of Lord Ganesha into the Idol.

5) Ganpati Idol Offerings & Worship Basic Procedures : Apply a tilak of sandalwood paste (chandan) and kumkum on the Lord's forehead. Offer fresh flowers, a sacred thread (janeu), and 21 blades of durva (doob) grass. Present sweet delicacies like modaks or laddoos along with seasonal fruits as bhog.

6) Conclude the ritual by performing the daily Ganesh Aarti with family members, ollowed by the distribution of prasadam to everyone who participated in the pooja.
